Osaka was one of the cities that played a central role in World War II and, in part because of this time period, has a lot of both historical and more modern sights for visitors to enjoy. Here are the top ten things to do in Osaka.
Namba Grand Kagetsu: This entertainment hall was built in 1987 and is equipped with the latest theatrical innovations. It offers hilarious comedy shows as well as acrobatic performances and songs. Come any day as the club is open 365 days a year.
Universal Studios Osaka: This theme park is the equivalent to Universal Studios in Orlando or Hollywood and offers visitors a day they will never forget. The park features rides such as Jaws and Terminator.
Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan: This unique and fascinating aquarium is one of the largest in the world and offers visitors a look at the varieties of fish that make up the Pacific Rim. The tour allows visitors to get the underwater feel without actually being underwater.
Osaka Castle: Originally built in the 1580's, this was one the largest castle in Japan. Climb up to the top of the castle and step out onto the observation platform for a unique view of the city. The inside has a history museum describing the castle in detail.
Shitennoji Temple: This is the oldest temple in Japan and was built over 1,400 years ago. The temple is famous for its architectural appeal and symmetrical design. The grounds around it are beautiful and locals can be found praying throughout the temple.
Dotonbori: When the sun goes down, this is the place to be. Dotonbori is the heart of Osaka nightlife. The area has more than enough theaters, restaurants, bars and nightclubs for everybody.
Umeda Sky Building: Enter this building from the street at the third level and step out onto the floating garden observatory for an excellent view. Move to the top of the building via elevator and enjoy some of the best views the city has to offer.
Osaka Castle Park: Located near the Osaka Castle, this park offers many beautiful colors including red, yellow, brown, and green. Take a jog around the castle the was rebuilt in the 1930's.
Sumiyoshi-taisha Shrine: This is an old shrine that was built prior to the influx Buddhist architecture had on the area. It is one of the oldest shrines in Japan and also has shops to purchase souvenirs.
Tempozan Ferris Wheel: Located next to the aquarium, this Ferris wheel is on the Harbor and offers tremendous views of the city and a breathtaking ride to the top of this 112.5 meter Ferris wheel.
